The honest answer: it depends. Photo estimation is only as good as what it can see and how readable the portion is. We are not going to quote you a single percentage, because no one number holds true across every meal. What is more useful is knowing where the method is strong and where it is weak:
Where it works well
- Plates where foods sit separately — grilled chicken, rice and salad side by side.
- Standard, easily recognised portions: a slice of pizza, a bowl of oats, a banana.
- Good light and a sharp image; shadow and blur make volume hard to judge.
- A reference object of known size in frame (fork, glass, edge of the plate).
Where it struggles
- Mixed or layered dishes: stews, soups, stir-fries — some ingredients are simply not visible.
- Invisible fat. This is the single biggest weakness of photo estimation: butter or oil added during cooking does not appear in the image but changes the calories substantially.
- Sauces and syrups, where the quantity rarely reads from a photo.
- Containers of unclear depth — a deep bowl and a shallow one can look identical.
- Home recipes; the same dish name can carry very different calories in different kitchens.
The practical framing is this: in calorie tracking, the consistency of your weekly trend matters more than the precision of any single meal. Weighing everything to be perfectly accurate and quitting after two weeks beats nothing; logging quickly and approximately for months beats both. Does counting calories from a photo actually work?
Yes, provided you set the right expectation. The goal is not laboratory precision but a sustainable tracking habit. The most common reason people abandon calorie tracking is that it feels like too much work; photo logging removes that friction, so even at slightly lower precision it produces better long-term results.
How can calories be determined from a picture of food?
The model first classifies the foods in the image (this is chicken breast, this is rice), then estimates volume from the area each occupies and its apparent depth. That volume is converted to grams and multiplied by per-100g values from a nutrition database. So the photo does not "measure" calories directly; it recognises the food, estimates the portion and calculates from known nutrition data.
Will a dark or blurry photo be a problem?
Yes. As light drops, the edges and depth of the food become ambiguous, which makes both recognition and portion estimation harder. For the best result shoot from above, avoid casting a shadow, and keep the whole plate in frame. If a result looks wrong you can always correct it.
What happens when there are several foods on one plate?
Each food is recognised and listed separately, with its own portion and calorie figure. That way you can correct a single item without touching the others.
Does it need an internet connection?
Yes. Image analysis runs on a server rather than on the device, so a connection is needed while the photo is processed. You can take the photo offline and process it later.
